Ten faculty members honored by the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences


Clemson University’s largest college honored 10 faculty members for outstanding teaching, learning, mentoring and collaboration at a ceremony on Oct. 10 held for the first time on the roof of the Watt Family Innovation Center.

Honorees from the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences were: Andrew Neptune, Garrett Pataky, Emily Scribner, Jianhua “Joshua” Tong, Jon Calhoun, Mary Beth Kurz, Bryan Miller, Thomas Sharkey, Huijuan “Jane” Zhao and Brian Booth. .

“The faculty members honored today are at the core of our college’s mission to create an exceptional student experience, drive innovation and bring about change throughout South Carolina and beyond,” said the dean. of the college, Anand Gramopadhye. “Their hard work and dedication inspires us all. I extend my deepest gratitude to each of this year’s honorees.”

Byars Award for Excellence in Fundamentals of Engineering Education
Winner: Andrew Neptune, senior lecturer in General Engineering
About the award: Recognizes excellence in teaching fundamentals of engineering

The Murray Stokely Award
Source: Garrett Pataky, assistant professor of mechanical engineering
About the award: Awarded to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in engineering teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.

Junior Division Award for Excellence in Teaching
Winner: Emily Scribner, environmental engineering and Earth science instructor
About the award: It recognizes excellence in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching with an emphasis on the past two years and is reserved for faculty members with less than seven years in higher education.

McQueen Quattlebaum Branch Achievement Award
Source: Jianhua “Joshua” Tong, professor of materials science and engineering
About the award: It recognizes faculty achievement over the past year and nominations and awards over the past three years.

Young Researcher of the Year
Source: Jon Calhoun, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering
About the award: It recognizes the efforts of high-achieving faculty whose work improves society by generating and disseminating new knowledge.

Partnership Award
Winners: Mary Beth Kurz, assistant professor of industrial engineering; Bryan Miller, associate dean for research and graduate studies and professor in the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences; and Thomas Sharkey, professor of industrial engineering
About the award: Recognizes a group of two or more scholars who have demonstrated outstanding and collaborative research and/or teaching that have made a significant contribution to the college.

Esin Gulari Leadership and Service Award
Winner: Huijuan (Jane) Zhao, professor and graduate program director in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
About the award: Recognizes college faculty who undertake leadership and service activities that require a selfless commitment of time and effort.

Mentorship Award
Source: Brian Booth, assistant professor of bioengineering
About the award: It honors a faculty member who continues to enhance the student experience and experience at Clemson.
